Main Food Crops in Kenya

The main food crops grown in our country are maize, wheat, rice, potatoes, beans, and green grams.

Maize is the staple crop grown in most households in the country. The challenge, however, is that its production has not increased with the increase in the population.

Agricultural Production (Crops)

The agriculture sector is the backbone of the Kenyan economy. It contributes to 33 percent of the gross domestic product in the country. Agricultural production involves the exploitation of resources such as water and soils. With the increase in population over the years, there has been an increase in food demands to feed this population. This, however, has to be done while conserving resources so they can be used by future generations. Sustainable and regenerative agriculture has become a necessity and as AWADI, this is the approach we are using to train our farmers.

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

Regenerative agriculture is a way of farming aimed at improving soil health and conserving the environment while producing the highest yields of crops. Several practices are aimed at supporting this. Some of the principles that guide regenerative agriculture include;
 – Enhancing and improving soil health
 – Optimization of resource management
 – Alleviation of climate change
 – Improvement of water quality and availability
