Poultry
✓ high demand
Poultry farming in Kenya is a thriving industry, with chickens being the most common type of poultry raised. However, turkeys and ducks are also gaining popularity, especially among small-scale farmers. In poultry farming, we mainly deal with chicken, turkey and ducks.
Chicken, turkey, ducks are the most popular poultry because of high demand for the meat and eggs production.
Chicken
Chicken farming is the most widespread poultry enterprise forming the backbone of Kenya’s poultry industry. It encompasses both commercial and backyard farming. Commercial farms, often large-scale operations, produce broiler chickens for meat and layer chickens for eggs. Backyard farming, on the other hand, is characterized by small-scale production for household consumption and local markets.
Layer
Layers are chickens raised for egg production. They start laying eggs at around 18-20 weeks of age and can continue laying for up to 18 months. The demand for eggs in Kenya is also high, and the egg industry is a significant contributor to the country’s economy.

Turkey
Turkey farming in Kenya is a relatively new but growing industry, it has gained traction in recent years. Turkeys are primarily raised for meat production, and their meat is considered a delicacy. The demand for turkey meat is increasing, especially during festive seasons like Christmas and Thanksgiving. The increasing demand for turkey meat has led to a surge in turkey farming ventures, particularly in regions with suitable climatic conditions.

Broiler
Broilers are chickens raised for meat production. They are typically slaughtered at around 6-8 weeks of age. The demand for broiler meat in Kenya is high, driven by a growing population and changing dietary preferences and urbanization.
Indigenous
Indigenous chickens, also known as “Kienyeji” chickens, are a popular choice for small-scale farmers. They are hardy, disease-resistant, and well-adapted to local conditions. Kienyeji chickens are valued for their meat and eggs, which are believed to be more nutritious than those from commercial breeds. They are commonly raised in free-range systems, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.

Duck
Duck farming in Kenya is also a growing industry. Ducks are raised for meat and egg production. Duck meat is considered a healthy alternative to chicken and beef, and duck eggs are believed to be more nutritious than chicken eggs. While the duck farming industry is still in its early stages, it holds significant potential for growth, especially in regions with suitable water bodies.
